RSI: ROB STONE INTERVIEW WITH TOLER GOODWIN

  • Recently, Rob Stone sat down with Coronado hoops coach Toler Goodwin to discuss their upcoming league games.
    RS:  Who are your top players?

    Our top players are Sr. Lauren White and Jr. Janie Ruttert.

    RS:  What are the team's strengths?

    TG: We believe our calling card is defense. We do a sound fundamental job playing man defense.
    Offensively we have a couple people who are our primary scorers, but we get productivity from a number of players.
    Our players have a strong understanding of their roles and responsibilities. When we play to those we can be pretty good.

    RS:  What are the weaknesses?

    TG: Size and depth. We have some size but do not have the depth so we must be conscious of our fouls and how we are being attacked.

    RS: Who are the top teams in your league?

    TG: The top two teams in our league should be us and Pt. Loma with Pt. Loma being the favorite.  The other two teams in the league are La Jolla and Patrick Henry.

    RS: How tough is your league?

    TG: Overall league strength is average as two teams are so poor.  However, Pt. Loma is good and we are solid as well.  Both of us will be contenders for the Division III title this year.

DILLON FITZMORRIS BASKETBALL ALL-STAR

Dillon Fitzmorris, a 6-foot-1 guard from Point Loma High School (PLHS), contributed three points, three rebounds, and one steal in helping the South defeat the North by a score of 109-101 in the San Diego Section’s men’s senior all-star basketball game played at Horizon Christian High School on Friday evening, April 12. “It was exciting to have the opportunity to play in an event of this magnitude,” said Fitzmorris.   “It was also a little nerve-wracking at first.   But for the most part, it was a lot of fun.” After entering the contest with 10:51 remaining in the first half, Fitzmorris immediately made his impact felt by grabbing a clutch rebound off of the backboard and leading the South squad on a fast break for an easy basket going the other way. “Playing with the best players in the county was a huge privilege and an honor for me to be a part of,” said Fitzmorris. HICKS LEADS UC TO VICTORY OVER VIKINGS

The University City (UC) Centurion men's basketball team defeated the La Jolla Vikings, 53-37, in a Western League game played at La Jolla High on Friday night, January 28. Behind the performances of 6-foot-4 senior forwards Amir Hicks and Tim Patrick and 5-foot-9 senior guard Stephen Rivera, UC jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead and opened it up to 15-10 early in the second quarter. By the time both battling ballclubs were heading into the locker room at halftime, the Centurions were enjoying a 21-13 cushion. After the intermission, led by the play of 6-foot-5 senior forward Nick Reynolds, the Vikings outscored UC 18-6 to take a 31-27 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
