THROWBACK TUESDAY: UC CENTURIONS SPEARED BY SERRA CONQUISTADORS

BY ROB STONE SEPTEMBER 2011 The University City (UC) Centurions suffered a tough 27-13 loss to the Serra Conquistadors in a non-league football game at Serra last Friday, Sept. 23. UC jumped out to an early 7-0 lead when senior running back Jordan Green gathered in a six-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Jack Minnick with 6:06 left in the first quarter. With the score all tied up at 7-7, Green got into the end zone once again, this time on a touchdown run from three yards out to give the Centurions a cushion of 13-7 with 4:35 remaining in the second quarter. Unfortunately for UC, that was as close as they would get as the Conquistadors would pull away and clinch the victory in the second half. With the loss, the Centurions saw their record fall to 2-2 on the young season. Meanwhile, senior running back Kenneth Martey matriculated the ball 55 yards on eight carries, but it wasn’t quite enough as the La Jolla Vikings (1-3) were shutout 34-0 by the St. Augustine

THROWBACK THURSDAY: SPORTS ROUNDUP FROM LA JOLLA AREA SCHOOLS

BY ROB STONE SEPTEMBER 2011 Energized by the efforts of Emily Feerick (nine kills), Mackey Forgey (12 digs), and Desi Peterson (three aces), the University City (UC) Lady Centurions swept the Montgomery Lady Aztecs in three games (25-22, 25-20, 25-16) in a non-league volleyball match at University City High School last week. Feerick had two blocks, Cassie Knutson 12 kills, Marissa Gomez six kills, Marina Varano 12 assists and Emma Choi 19 digs as the Lady Centurions also swept the Clairemont Lady Chieftans in three games by scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-20 at Clairemont. Meanwhile, behind the play of Katherine Lane (nine kills) and Kelly McPherson (27 assists), The Bishop’s School Lady Knights took out La Jolla High School in four games (26-24, 16-25, 25-13, 25-23) at Bishop’s last week. THROWBACK TUESDAY: LA JOLLA VIKINGS 23, WEST HILLS WOLFPACK 21

  BY ROB STONE SEPTEMBER 2011 The La Jolla Vikings defeated the West Hills Wolf Pack, 23-21, in a non-league football game at West Hills last Friday, Sept. 9. La Jolla was led by running backs Kenneth Martey (8 carries, 94 yards, 1 TD), Mark Pollan (11 carries, 67 yards, 1 TD), Conor Irwin (8 carries, 50 yards), Dillon Cromwell (7 carries, 37 yards), and Chance Abbott (6 carries, 32 yards, 1 TD). With the victory, the Vikings evened their record at 1-1 on the young season. In other week two non-league football action: The Calipatria Hornets came down from the Imperial Valley only to be stung 56-6 by the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) Torreys. Country Day cruised behind the performances of Sage Burmeister (12 carries, 74 yards, 3 TD’s), Colin McMahon (4 carries, 60 yards, 3 TD’s), Daniel Henry (2 receptions, 25 yards, 1 TD), and Josh Church (1 fumble recovery, 1 TD). THROWBACK THURSDAY: TORREYS TRUMP TRI-CITY, CENTURIONS TOP HILLTOP

BY ROB STONE SEPTEMBER 2011 Behind the performance of junior running back Sage Burmeister (21 carries, 114 yards, 1 TD), the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) Torrey football team trumped the Tri-City (TCC) Christian Eagles, 23-12, in their season opener at Country Day on Friday, Sept. 2. A seven-yard carry for a touchdown by junior Colin McMahon (11 carries, 64 yards, 1 TD) gave Country Day a slim cushion of 7-6 in the second quarter. But, Burmeister’s five-yard burst for a score in the fourth quarter enabled the Torreys to build a 16-12 lead. Later in the fourth quarter, a 12-yard interception return for a touchdown by junior linebacker Josh Church (2 INT’s, 46 yards, 1 TD) sealed the victory for LJCD. BY ROB STONE JANUARY 2011 The University City (UC) Centurion men's basketball team defeated the La Jolla Vikings, 53-37, in a Western League game played at La Jolla High on Friday night, January 28. Behind the performances of 6-foot-4 senior forwards Amir Hicks and Tim Patrick and 5-foot-9 senior guard Stephen Rivera, UC jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead and opened it up to 15-10 early in the second quarter. By the time both battling ballclubs were heading into the locker room at halftime, the Centurions were enjoying a 21-13 cushion. After the intermission, led by the play of 6-foot-5 senior forward Nick Reynolds, the Vikings outscored UC 18-6 to take a 31-27 advantage at the end of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter, Patrick raced in for three dunks and Hicks hit 4-of-6 free throws from the charity stripe as the Centurions outscored La Jolla 26-6 down the stretch to pull away for the victory. “When Tim (Patrick) dunks the ball the way he’s capable of doing, it giv

THROWBACK THURSDAY: TORREYS BOUNCED BY MATER DEI IN DIVISION IV BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

Division IV playoff matchup with the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders, La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) baseball coach John Edman felt confident. “We lost to them once already, but we know that we can play with them,” said Edman. “We want another shot at them.” Country Day (22-10) did get their shot. Unfortunately, they came up just short in suffering a tough 6-5 loss in ten innings to Mater Dei (16-16-1) in a third-round elimination game played at San Diego High last Saturday, May 29. The Torreys received a quality start from Ian Lutz, who scattered seven hits over seven innings pitched. Lutz, a sophomore right-hander, allowed three runs, only two of which were earned. Country Day also got quality play from junior Frankie Brown (3-for-4), freshman Tommy Edman (2-for-4, 1 run batted in, 2 runs scored), and junior Anthony Torres (3-for-4, 2 runs batted in). “Our guys love to play baseball,” said John Edman. “We played real
