THROWBACK THURSDAY: TORREYS BOUNCED BY MATER DEI IN DIVISION IV BASEBALL PLAYOFFS

THROWBACK THURSDAY: TORREYS BOUNCED BY MATER DEI IN DIVISION IV BASEBALL PLAYOFFS BY ROB STONE JUNE 2010 https://www.smwwscout.com/scout/rob-stone Leading up to their C.I.F. Division IV playoff matchup with the Mater Dei Catholic Crusaders, La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) baseball coach John Edman felt confident. “We lost to them once already, but we know that we can play with them,” said Edman. “We want another shot at them.” Country Day (22-10) did get their shot. Unfortunately, they came up just short in suffering a tough 6-5 loss in ten innings to Mater Dei (16-16-1) in a third-round elimination game played at San Diego High last Saturday, May 29. The Torreys received a quality start from Ian Lutz, who scattered seven hits over seven innings pitched. Lutz, a sophomore right-hander, allowed three runs, only two of which were earned. Country Day also got quality play from junior Frankie Brown (3-for-4), freshman Tommy Edman (2-for-4, 1 run batted in, 2 runs scored),

"We came out with some intensity," said MEIER. "SANTA FE CHRISTIAN (14-6) is an amazing team. They shoot the ball really well."...MEIER on trailing by a score of 41-36 before rallying and closing the game with a 10-2 run to win it: "We could've quit. But we sucked it up, played some defense, and came away with a victory."...LA JOLLA COUNTRY DAY'S 6-foot-5 sophomore center, FRANKIE BAMFORD, (24 points, 12 rebounds, eight blocked shots) finished two blocks shy of a triple double, coming up just short..."FRANKIE had a phenomenal performance for us," said MEIER...BAMFORD was followed in the LJCD scoring column by: 6-4 junior RYAN WYATT (9 points), 6-1 junior ALEX PEREZ (8 points), 5-9 sop
