SPORTS ROUNDUP FROM LA JOLLA-AREA SCHOOLS

Energized by the efforts of Emily Feerick (nine kills), Mackey Forgey (12 digs), and Desi Peterson (three aces), the University City (UC) Lady Centurions swept the Montgomery Lady Aztecs in three games (25-22, 25-20, 25-16) in a non-league volleyball match at University City High School last week.

Feerick had two blocks, Cassie Knutson 12 kills, Marissa Gomez six kills, Marina Varano 12 assists and Emma Choi 19 digs as the Lady Centurions also swept the Clairemont Lady Chieftans in three games by scores of 27-25, 25-20 and 25-20 at Clairemont.

Meanwhile, behind the play of Katherine Lane (nine kills) and Kelly McPherson (27 assists), The Bishop’s School Lady Knights took out La Jolla High School in four games (26-24, 16-25, 25-13, 25-23) at Bishop’s last week.

After being taken by the Lady Knights, the visiting Lady Vikings became the takers in beating the Grossmont Lady Foothillers in four games (27-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-19) as Katrina Powell had five aces and Megan Micheletti and Ryan Farley six kills apiece for LJHS.

Finally, despite the performances of Kendall Peterkin (11 kills), Annie Hassellman (28 assists), and Arela Williams (10 digs), the La Jolla Country Day Lady Torreys suffered a tough five-game (22-25, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23, 12-15) defeat to the Cathedral Catholic Lady Dons at LJCD.

In non-league football action:

The La Jolla Vikings defeated the West Hills Wolf Pack 23-21 at West Hills.

La Jolla was led by running backs Kenneth Martey (eight carries, 94 yards, one TD), Mark Pollan (11 carries, 67 yards, one TD), Conor Irwin (eight carries, 50 yards), Dillon Cromwell (seven carries, 37 yards) and Chance Abbott (six carries, 32 yards, one TD).

With the victory, the Vikings evened their record at 1-1 in the young season.

Meanwhile, the Calipatria Hornets came down from Imperial Valley only to be stung 56-6 by LJCD.

Country Day cruised behind the performances of Sage Burmeister (12 carries, 74 yards, three TDs), Colin McMahon (four carries, 60 yards, three TDs), Daniel Henry (two receptions, 25 yards, one TD) and Josh Church (one fumble recovery, one TD).

With the win, the Torreys remained unbeaten at 2-0.

Finally, despite the efforts of running backs Jordan Green (19 carries, 102 yards, one TD) and Sam Haynes (20 carries, 79 yards, one TD), the University City Centurions suffered a tough 21-14 loss to the Grossmont Foothillers at UCHS (1-1).
